A Vibrant Celebration: Blending Birthday Joy with Dia de los Muertos Traditions + Easy Party Food & DIY Decor

Embracing the Spirit of Dia de los Muertos on My Birthday
My birthday, November 1st, beautifully coincides with Dia de los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead. For years, I’ve been fascinated by this rich, traditional Catholic holiday, which, despite its vibrant skull imagery, is often misunderstood and mistakenly linked to Halloween. While Halloween focuses on spooky scares, Dia de los Muertos is a profound celebration of life and memory, a time to honor saints and lovingly remember departed family and friends. It’s a day filled with color, joy, and reflection, rather than somber mourning.
This year, I decided it was time to finally embrace this unique alignment and blend my birthday festivities with the heartfelt traditions of Dia de los Muertos. The symbolism resonates deeply with me; the idea of celebrating another year of life while also honoring those who have passed on my special day feels incredibly meaningful. I envisioned a vibrant celebration, full of life, color, and delicious food, a perfect fusion of my “cumpleaños” and the spiritual richness of Dia de los Muertos.
Crafting a Festive Atmosphere: Decor and Altar Inspiration
To truly capture the essence of Dia de los Muertos, I focused on creating an atmosphere that balances festive joy with respectful remembrance. Instead of the usual Halloween candy and spooky decorations, my table would feature a makeshift altar, or “ofrenda,” a central element of any Day of the Dead celebration. This altar would proudly display my DIY skull candle centerpiece, a kaleidoscope of bright, bold colored skulls nestled amongst rich-hued flowers, reminiscent of traditional marigolds.
Marigolds, or “cempasúchil,” are an iconic symbol of Dia de los Muertos, believed to guide spirits home with their vibrant color and strong scent. Incorporating these bright blooms, even artificial ones, adds an authentic touch to the decor. The decorative skulls, often mistaken for mere Halloween props, symbolize “calaveras” or sugar skulls – a sweet, playful nod to the cycle of life and death, frequently placed on ofrendas as offerings to the deceased. This blend of traditional elements with a modern, DIY twist ensures the celebration is both meaningful and visually stunning.
The beauty of this theme is its adaptability. You can truly make it your own, infusing personal touches that reflect your connection to the holiday. The centerpiece, with its glow of candles and sparkling skulls, will serve as a focal point, drawing guests into the festive spirit and sparking conversations about the holiday’s rich heritage.
Effortless Entertaining: Delicious Bites with Tyson® and State Fair®
No celebration is complete without fantastic food, especially when hosting guests for an extended period! For this combined birthday and Dia de los Muertos bash, I opted for convenient yet delicious finger foods that are perfect for entertaining a crowd. My go-to choices, easily found at Sam’s Club, are Tyson® Crispy Chicken Strips and State Fair® Mini Corn Dogs. These staples are universally loved and incredibly simple to prepare, freeing up more time to enjoy the party and less time in the kitchen.

The versatility of a large bag of Tyson® Crispy Chicken Strips is a party host’s dream. Knowing I’d have guests arriving throughout the day and into the evening, I planned a menu that could evolve. For daytime arrivals, classic chicken strips served with ketchup are always a hit – a simple pleasure that appeals to everyone. As the evening progresses and the ambiance shifts, I transform some of these crispy strips into elegant chicken skewers, paired with a truly incredible homemade Cilantro Jalapeño Dipping Sauce. This sauce is a game-changer; its fresh, zesty, and subtly spicy flavor profile elevates anything it touches and can be used in countless other dishes beyond just skewers. The ease of preparing these items means I can focus on my guests and the celebration, rather than being tied to the stove.
Recipe Spotlight: Chicken Skewers & Zesty Cilantro Jalapeño Sauce
This dipping sauce is incredibly flavorful and surprisingly easy to make, adding a gourmet touch to your party spread. It’s vibrant, creamy, and provides the perfect complement to the savory chicken strips. Beyond skewers, consider using it as a dressing for salads, a spread for sandwiches, or a topping for tacos. It’s truly a secret weapon for any host!
What You’ll Need for the Sauce & Skewers:

- Tyson® Crispy Chicken Strips (prepared according to package directions)
- Cherry tomatoes
- Small mozzarella balls (bocconcini)
- Wooden skewer sticks
- 3 cloves garlic, peeled
- 4 jalapeños, cut in half and deseeded (for a milder kick, use only 2 jalapeños)
- Salt to taste
- Juice of 1 fresh lime
- 1 large bunch of cilantro, stems removed
- 1/4 cup sour cream (Greek yogurt is an excellent alternative for a tangier, lighter option)
- 1/2 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1/4 cup olive oil
Instructions for Cilantro Jalapeño Sauce:
This sauce comes together in minutes, making it perfect for last-minute party prep.
- Combine Ingredients: Add all the sauce ingredients – garlic cloves, halved jalapeños, salt, lime juice, cilantro leaves, sour cream (or Greek yogurt), white vinegar, and olive oil – into your food processor or blender.
- Blend Until Smooth: Process the mixture until it is completely smooth and creamy. Scrape down the sides as needed to ensure all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated. Taste and adjust salt or lime juice if desired.
- Chill: For best flavor, transfer the sauce to a serving bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Assembling Your Chicken Skewers:
These skewers are not only delicious but also visually appealing, adding another pop of color to your table.
- Prepare Chicken: Once your Tyson® Crispy Chicken Strips are cooked and cooled slightly, chop them into bite-sized pieces that are easy to skewer.
- Assemble Skewers: Carefully thread a cherry tomato, a mozzarella ball, and a piece of chicken onto each skewer stick. Repeat the pattern until the skewer is full, leaving a small space at each end for easy handling.
- Serve: Arrange the finished chicken skewers beautifully on a platter and serve alongside your homemade Cilantro Jalapeño Sauce for dipping.

DIY Dia de los Muertos Candle Centerpiece: A Step-by-Step Guide
Creating your own Dia de los Muertos centerpiece is a rewarding project that allows for immense creativity. This DIY project is surprisingly simple and results in a stunning, festive focal point for your celebration. The interplay of colorful skulls, faux marigolds, and soft candlelight truly embodies the celebratory spirit of the holiday.
What You’ll Need for Your Centerpiece:
- Various sized clear glass vases (ensure the skulls can fit inside!)
- Artificial flowers that resemble marigolds (or any bright, rich-hued blooms)
- Decorative skulls (consider different sizes for visual interest)
- Aqua and white spray paint (or colors that match your party theme)
- Adhesive spray (craft glue spray)
- Fine glitter (in coordinating or contrasting colors)
- An old shoe box or cardboard box (for glittering)
- Votive or pillar candles (battery-operated candles are a safe alternative)
How to Create Your Dia de los Muertos Centerpiece:
This process is easy and fun, allowing you to personalize your decor.
- Transforming the Skulls: Most decorative skulls come in a dull, grayish hue. To bring them to life with Dia de los Muertos vibrancy, it’s time for a colorful makeover!
- In a well-ventilated area, spray paint your skulls with aqua, white, or any desired vibrant color.
- Remember that you’ll need to paint in stages: spray one side, let it dry completely (refer to paint can for drying times), then flip and spray the next side. Repeat this process until the entire skull, including the bottom, is evenly coated. This usually takes three to four rotations.
- Adding Sparkle with Glitter: Glitter adds an undeniable festive flair, mimicking the intricate designs of traditional sugar skulls.
- Once the paint on your skulls is thoroughly dry, prepare your glitter station. Pour a generous amount of glitter into an old shoe box or shallow container.
- Working quickly, spray a dry skull evenly with adhesive spray, ensuring good coverage.
- Immediately place the sticky skull into the glitter-filled box. Close the lid (if using a shoe box) and gently shake, or carefully roll the skull around, until it’s completely covered in shimmering glitter.
- Remove the skull, tap off any excess glitter, and set it aside to dry. Repeat for all skulls.
- Preparing the Flowers:
- While the skulls dry, prepare your artificial flowers. Gently pull the individual flower heads off their stems. This makes them easier to arrange loosely within the vase.
- Assembling the Vases:
- Take your chosen clear glass vases. Fill the bottom half of each vase with your loose flower heads. Aim for a lush, full base.
- Next, carefully place your glittered skulls into the vases, turning them upside down or sideways. Don’t overthink their placement; the beauty lies in their natural, slightly whimsical arrangement. They’ll look fantastic no matter how they fall, adding an element of playful unpredictability.
- Adding the Candle: Finally, place a candle on top of the inverted skulls. The candle provides a warm, inviting glow that truly completes the centerpiece, making it ready to adorn your celebration table.

Finishing Touches: Creating a Memorable Dia de los Muertos Birthday Bash
With your delectable food and stunning DIY centerpiece ready, it’s time to complete the party setup. The beauty of a Dia de los Muertos theme lies in its vibrant aesthetic, which can be extended through various decorative elements to create an immersive experience for your guests.
Consider enhancing your table with a fishnet tablecloth for a unique texture, or colorful placemats that pop. Scatter extra loose flowers and perhaps some handmade tulle pom-poms around the table to add softness and depth. Don’t forget other traditional elements like “papel picado” (intricately cut paper banners) or small personal altars with photos of loved ones to truly honor the spirit of the holiday.
For your serving station, arrange the Tyson® Crispy Chicken Strips and State Fair® Mini Corn Dogs attractively. Offer a variety of dipping sauces, including your amazing Cilantro Jalapeño Sauce, along with classic ketchup and mustard. A selection of beverages – from aguas frescas to sparkling cider – will ensure all your guests stay refreshed.
